"Greene Acres is a community garden on the corner of Greene and Franklin Avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. On the land that is now Greene Acres, there were once brownstones. Those homes burned and were demolished in the 1970s. It was briefly a community garden in the 1980s and again was reestablished in the early 2000s. In September 2012, the garden adopted Rhode Island Red hens. “The girls,” as they have come to be known, quickly charmed the garden and the neighborhood. We have a dedicated committee of “Chicken Tenders” who look after the chickens all year round and they also host "chicken chats." www.greeneacresgarden.com www.instagram.com/greeneacrescommunitygarden (Photo from @greeneacrescommunitygarden on Instagram) Scouted by Melanie Kahl

A little coop hidden in the back of the large Hattie Carthan Community Garden and Market. The Coop is on Lafayette and Marcy. The Chickens arrived at the garden in spring of 2010. They accept volunteer applications to care for the chickens on their website. "The eggs from our hens are distributed in our discounted weekly mixed basket and the dung will be added back to our compost. I feel truly, ancestrally linked to my foremothers who raised the same breed (Rhode Island Reds)"— read about the background on the program by Yonnette Fleming online. www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.com https://www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.com/livestock-program https://www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.com/_files/ugd/aaf081_dcaf2a57ef9b49ffa5be17f86a1b5bca.pdf www.instagram.com/hattie.carthan Scouted by Melanie Photo from the Hattie Carthan Garden Website

A 5,200 sq ft urban Farm in Bedford Stuyvesant dedicated to sustainable agriculture. "Of course, they’re gorgeous and lay eggs—up to one a day per bird—but their critical contributions go beyond that. “They really build soil and they build ecosystems,” LaMond says."
