Aarschot is located along the Demer river and has medieval origins. The city center is dominated by the Church of Our Lady which defines the skyline. Aarschot suffered heavy damage during the First World War. Reconstruction gave the city a mix of old and newer architecture. Today it functions as a regional service and shopping town. The surrounding countryside adds to its appeal. Aarschot combines history resilience and local life.
