The Dinant Citadel rises on a steep cliff above the Meuse River with strong stone walls that follow the edge of the rock and give the fortress a solid and commanding shape. A long stairway and a cable car connect the town to the top where open terraces offer wide views over the river the bridges and the narrow streets below. Inside you find a mix of open courtyards vaulted rooms and simple corridors that show the military character of the place without heavy decoration. The height and the calm flow of the river create a sense of space that makes the citadel feel both protective and quietly detached from the busy life in the town beneath.
