Château de Tourbillon stands on a rocky hill above the city of Sion and offers a wide view over the Rhône valley and the surrounding Alps. The castle was built in the thirteenth century as the residence of the bishops of Sion and later served as a strategic stronghold. Although a fire in the eighteenth century left it in ruins its walls towers and layout remain impressive. Visitors reach the castle by a steep path that passes through old fortifications and leads to a wide courtyard and the remains of the chapel with its delicate Gothic details. The site combines medieval architecture dramatic scenery and a strong sense of history and is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Valais region.
