German immigrant Claus Holtermann began baking bread in Historic Richmondtown in 1878, delivering loaves on foot and later by horse and wagon to Staten Island neighbors. Five generations later, the family still turns out Charlotte Russe—a yellow cupcake layered with raspberry jam, whipped cream, and a cherry—alongside buttery crumb cake, fresh kaiser rolls, and Viking bread. The Great Kills storefront hums with the kind of daily ritual a bakery earns only after nearly a century and a half.
