Raul and Michaela Duran opened a meat market on Valencia Street that would transform Bay Area eating forever. Two years later, in 1969, the Durans assembled the first Mission-style burrito—rice, beans, meat, and salsa wrapped tight in a griddled tortilla—and by 1972, La Cumbre had evolved into the taqueria that still serves that blueprint today, drawing devotees who know this is where the foil-wrapped legend began.
