Zaro's Family Bakery • 1927

Joseph Zaro arrived from Eastern Europe in 1927 and opened a modest kosher bakery in the Bronx, kneading dough by hand and building what would become a four-generation New York institution. His handmade bagels, challah, and black-and-white cookies earned devoted followers across the boroughs, eventually landing Zaro's in Grand Central Terminal and at outposts throughout the metro area. The bakery still turns out the same old-world rugelach and towering cakes that made it a staple nearly a century ago.
