August Scholz, a German immigrant and Civil War veteran, opened his beer garden above an old boardinghouse in 1866, creating what stands today as one of Texas's oldest continuously operating taverns. Purchased by the Austin Saengerrunde singing society in 1914, the Garten has served generations as a political hub, UT game day headquarters, and keeper of German tradition in the heart of Austin. The communal tables still fill with locals chasing bratwurst and live polka under the shade of oak trees.
