Named after the monster from Beowulf, this cave-like Harvard Square haunt won a landmark 1982 Supreme Court case when a nearby church tried to block its liquor license, arguing the case all the way to the nation's highest court with help from attorney Laurence Tribe. Founded by Herb and Sue Kuelzer and now run by their daughter Kari, the basement den still draws students and professors for its Beggar's Banquet specials, eclectic international plates, and one of Cambridge's deepest craft beer lists.
