Bob's Big Boy • 1936

The oldest surviving Bob's Big Boy stands along Riverside Drive in Burbank, a 1949 Googie masterpiece designed by Wayne McAllister where carhops still serve the original double-decker hamburger invented by founder Bob Wian in 1936. Neon signs illuminate the sweeping roofline and angled glass walls, while red vinyl booths inside have hosted everyone from rockabilly rebels to The Beatles. The Big Boy statue out front—chubby-cheeked and holding his burger aloft—remains Southern California's most photogenic roadside icon.
