The Black Horse Tavern & Pub • 1742

When Ebenezer Byram opened his farmhouse to stagecoach travelers in 1742, he launched what would become New Jersey's oldest continuously operating restaurant. Located on the route between Newark and Scranton, this Mendham landmark once welcomed George Washington and still serves from a building where the pub side began as horse stables. Today, the nearly three-century-old tavern draws families and history seekers alike for its chicken pot pie, French onion soup, and aged steaks served beneath original wooden beams.
