From her pushcart on the corner of 33rd and Ditmars, Elpida Vasiliadis—known simply as the Souvlaki Lady—grills pork and chicken souvlaki using her mother's recipe from their family taverna in Thessaloniki. The name came from her customers, not a sign, and it stuck. Now a grandmother serving three generations of Astorians, she still turns each skewer on all four sides so the juice stays in.
