When Filomena Consiglio bought a bakery down the street from her brother Frank Pepe's pizzeria in 1938, her son Salvatore opened Sally's Apizza in New Haven's Wooster Square and ignited a legendary rivalry. Coal-fired ovens bake thin-crust pies with the signature char that defines New Haven apizza, from the classic tomato pie topped only with sauce and Parmesan to the celebrated white clam pie. Lines still stretch down Wooster Street, just as they have for over eight decades.
