Valletta is the capital of the Republic of Malta and the seat of the Maltese government and parliament. It is the smallest capital city in the European Union in terms of population. Valletta is situated on a peninsula surrounded by two large natural harbors. It is a pre-planned city, reflected in the checkerboard pattern of its streets. The city boasts many buildings dating back to the time when the Order of Malta ruled the country, and it is surrounded by imposing fortifications. The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
