Investico

Investico (officially Stichting Investico) is an Amsterdam-based independent non-profit investigative journalism platform launched in 2014. It is dedicated to deep-dive, "slow-burn" investigative reporting that feeds the public debate with facts rather than scandals. Unlike traditional outlets that compete for "scoops," Investico operates on a collaborative model, acting as an investigative powerhouse that publishes its findings through a vast network of national and regional media partners, including De Groene Amsterdammer, Trouw, and the television program Nieuwsuur. The publication is recognized for its radical transparency and data-driven approach, bridging rigorous academic-style research with traditional shoe-leather journalism. It is particularly known for its focus on structural societal issues - such as housing crises, class justice, and environmental regulations - where it gives reporters months to follow a single trail. By making its research methods and source data free for other journalists and scientists, Investico treats investigative journalism as a public good, positioning itself as a vital "check and balance" in the Dutch democratic rule of law. Investico maintains a unique multi-pillar funding model as an ANBI-registered non-profit (Public Benefit Organization). It avoids the commercial pressures of shareholders and "click-driven" revenue by relying on a mix of philanthropic grants (such as from the Adessium Foundation), institutional subsidies from the Dutch Journalism Fund (Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek), and a rapidly growing base of over 12,500 individual donors known as "Vrienden van Investico." This financial independence allows the newsroom to bypass the "market failure" of expensive investigative journalism, ensuring that complex, high-impact stories are told regardless of their immediate profitability. Operating from its headquarters in Amsterdam, Investico has become a primary incubator for Dutch investigative talent. It serves as a participatory hub that trains the next generation of reporters through its Masterclasses, fostering a community that values deep analysis over the "news cycle of the day" and providing a critical lens on the transparency and accountability of Dutch institutions.
