Divergente is a Lisbon-based independent narrative journalism magazine founded in 2014. It is dedicated to slow, in-depth investigative reporting that focuses on subjects underrepresented in the mainstream media and voices that are often ignored. Emerging as a multidisciplinary project, the publication rejects the "churnalism" of the digital age, prioritizing rigour, context, and creative multimedia storytelling to encourage active citizenship and informed public debate. The publication is recognized for its "visceral" narrative style, bridging rigorous data journalism with the aesthetics of documentary cinema and design. It is particularly known for its award-winning long-form projects, such as “For you, Portugal, I swear!” - a multi-year investigation into the forgotten African commandos of the Colonial War - and its deep dives into climate change and social inequality. By treating each story as an artistic and journalistic "work," Divergente creates immersive digital experiences that unveil hidden silences in Portuguese and international history. Divergente maintains a non-profit, advert-free business model as an editorial project of Bagabaga Studios, a multimedia production cooperative. It is funded primarily through a combination of international philanthropic grants (such as from the Civitates foundation), European journalism support funds, and direct monthly contributions from its community of readers. This financial structure ensures total independence from billionaires, shareholders, and corporate interests, allowing the team to spend years on a single investigation if necessary to ensure the highest ethical and factual standards. Operating from its newsroom in the Arroios district of Lisbon, Divergente has grown into a prestigious reference for "alternative" and entrepreneurial journalism in Portugal. It serves as a vital platform for ethical, multidisciplinary reporting, fostering a critical lens on power structures and providing a space where journalists, artists, and data analysts collaborate to tell the stories that define our world.
