Gold and silver came from peru to be stored in Portobelo to then be shipped to spain. it was the most important trade center in the 16-17 hundreds. The town was built in 1612. the cannons reach 200 kilometers, protecting spanish goods. The town of Portobelo celebrates the Congo Carnival, celebrating the resistance of Cimarrones, formerly enslaves Africans during the Spanish period. This is also where Cristo Negro resides.
