De Metalen toren van Fourvière stands near the basilica on the heights of Lyon and rises like a slender iron silhouette that recalls the form of the Eiffel Tower in a lighter reduced version. Built in the late nineteenth century it served first as a viewpoint and later as a transmission tower so it combines the charm of a historic structure with a practical modern role. The tower lifts above the treetops and adds a distinctive industrial note to the otherwise ornate and spiritual atmosphere of the hill. From the paths around its base you sense the contrast between the intricate architecture of Fourvière and the clean metal lines of the tower which together shape a unique skyline visible from much of the city.
