Villefranche sur Mer is a sheltered seaside town set around a deep natural bay with colorful houses that rise steeply above the water. Visitors can wander through the old lanes that curve toward the citadel or explore the covered Rue Obscure which runs beneath the buildings and shows the medieval character of the town. The waterfront is lined with cafés and a long beach where people swim, snorkel or rent kayaks to explore the calm bay. Boats anchor close to the shore which gives the whole place a gentle maritime feel. Villefranche sur Mer is also a pleasant starting point for coastal walks that follow the hillsides and offer wide views of the Riviera.
