nanoshape is a German start-up with the mission to prevent implant-infections with innovative nanotechnology. Implant surfaces play a major role in implant anchorage and implant compatibility. Currently available implant systems usually have sandblasted and etched surfaces to enhance osseointegration (integration into surrounding bone tissue). In some cases functional coatings with other materials are applied. However, hardly any commercial implant systems have surfaces that can reduce the bacterial colonization. We have developed an innovative surface treatment that gives implants bacteria repellent properties. In this process, the topography of the base material is changed in such a way that bacteria adhere less, and some are even killed on contact. This mechanical effect can already be seen in nature: Dragonflies and other insects have very fine nanostructures on their wings that have such a bacteria repellent effect. By creating similar nanostructures on implant surfaces, we can realize comparable effects. This basic principle allows us to stay with the base material and eliminate the need for additional coating materials or active ingredients such as antibiotics. Our goal is to establish a new state of the art in the field of implant surfaces -together with implant manufacturers - in order to decrease patients suffering worldwide and at the same time save healthcare resources.
