Saint Domnius’ Cathedral is one of the most remarkable landmarks in Split and is considered the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world that still stands in its original structure. Built within what was once the mausoleum of Emperor Diocletian the cathedral reflects a rare blend of Roman architecture and later Christian design. Its circular form, detailed stone carvings and preserved columns show the elegance of the ancient imperial style while the interior feels intimate with wooden choir stalls, religious artwork and centuries of history layered into every corner. The cathedral stands beside the Bell Tower which rises high above Diocletian’s Palace and offers one of the best views over the city and the Adriatic Sea. Whether admired from the Peristil Square or explored from within Saint Domnius’ Cathedral remains a powerful symbol of Split’s long cultural and spiritual heritage.
