The Stone Gate is one of the most important historic and spiritual landmarks in Zagreb’s Upper Town and the only preserved original city gate from the medieval fortifications. Built in the 13th century it once served as a defensive passage but today it is best known for the small chapel hidden inside its vaulted archway. This quiet chapel holds a revered painting of the Virgin Mary which survived a great fire in the 18th century and has since become a symbol of protection for the city. As people pass through the dim stone corridor they often stop to light candles, pray or simply enjoy a moment of calm in the soft glow of the flickering lights. The Stone Gate blends everyday movement with peaceful devotion and its atmosphere feels both intimate and timeless. Surrounded by old streets, nearby cafés and historic buildings it remains one of the most cherished corners of the Upper Town.
