The 1896 Studios and Stages is a woman founded, family owned and run, series of unique Shooting Locations and Stages for the photo and film industry. The 1896 planted its roots 19 years ago when the owner Jen Durbin (a sculptor and scenic painter ‘in the biz’) saw potential in three gloriously-worn warehouses from 1896 - in the yet to be recognized neighborhood of Bushwick. Since then, the 1896 and our Bushwick community have blossomed. The 1896 now is comprised of three business; The Filming Stages comprised of a dozen shooting locations within its five warehouses and outdoor courtyard & drive (known in the filming worlds as “New York’s 6th Alleyway”), Primate Props an on-site prop rental, and 25 operating artist studios. From the early years shooting Girls (episode ‘Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. the Crackcident’) to the phenomenal David Bowie’s final music video (Lazarus), a dozen years working with SNL, to our most recent work with Marvel’s Daredevil - we like to imagine we can do it all!
