The Secession Building is one of the most iconic examples of Viennese Jugendstil and it was created by the artists of the Vienna Secession as a symbol of artistic freedom. The building has a striking white façade a gilded dome made of laurel leaves and decorative elements that express the ideas of modern art at the turn of the twentieth century. Inside the building the most famous work is Gustav Klimts Beethoven Frieze which was created in 1902 as part of an exhibition dedicated to Beethoven. The frieze is a large mural that shows human longing the struggle for happiness and the final triumph of joy through art. The Secession Building continues to host contemporary art exhibitions and remains a key site for understanding the artistic revolution of Viennese Modernism.
